Ingersoll Rand has used three fault languages across its rotary screw line, and the first job is working out which one your machine speaks. Older SSR machines in the 10 to 40 HP class carry the original Intellisys controller, which shows numbered messages on a small display: Message -02- through -08-, one number per condition. Larger SG-era SSR packages use a later Intellisys that spells faults out in words: HIGH AIREND TEMPERATURE, HIGH SUMP PRESSURE, CHECK MOTOR ROTATION. Current R-series machines carry the Xe-50M and Xe-70M controllers with structured codes, and the oil-free Sierra machines run the larger Xe-145M, which names sensors by tag (1AVPT, 2ATT, 5OTT) and adds bearing-oil protections that the flooded-screw machines do not have.
How to read the display. On the numbered Intellisys, -02- is motor overload, -03- high discharge air temperature, -04- high discharge pressure, -05- and -06- are sensor failures, and -07- and -08- are the emergency stop pair: -08- simply means someone pressed SET while the button was still pushed in, so twist the button out first. On the Xe controllers the letter is the severity. An A: code is an alarm or warning the machine keeps running through (A:2118 high pressure, A:2128 high temperature, A:4804 service due). An E: code is a trip that shut the machine down (E:0010 emergency stop, E:0020 motor overload, E:0129 excess temperature). Third-party code lists sometimes mislabel these, so the pages here follow the manual's definition. Write down the exact message or code before resetting; on the Xe-145M the sensor tag maps to one specific instrument on the machine.
Two faults that must not be reset and retried. CHECK MOTOR ROTATION on the SG-era controller almost always follows electrical work that swapped two supply phases, and running a screw airend backwards destroys it in minutes. Low Bearing Oil Press on the Sierra machines is the same kind of protection: low oil pressure eats bearings fast. Both stay down until a technician has looked.
The tables below list every documented code by controller. Each links to its own page with the meaning, the machines that show it, the likely causes, what is safe to check in-house, and when the machine needs to stay down until a technician arrives. Each page cites the Ingersoll Rand manual it was verified against.
Five Ingersoll Rand codes to know first
- Message -03- (Ingersoll Rand SSR Intellisys (10-40 HP)): High discharge air temperature.
- Message -02- (Ingersoll Rand SSR Intellisys (10-40 HP)): Motor overload.
- CHECK MOTOR ROTATION (Ingersoll Rand SSR Intellisys (SG-era controller)): No inlet vacuum after start — possible reverse rotation.
- E:0129 (Ingersoll Rand Xe-series controller (Xe-50M/Xe-70M, R-series rotary)): Excess temperature shutdown.
- E:0010 (Ingersoll Rand Xe-series controller (Xe-50M/Xe-70M, R-series rotary)): Emergency stop trip.
